SP5 Quiz

1. Are you a yarn snob (do you prefer higher quality and/or natural fibers)? Do you avoid Red Heart and Lion Brand? Or is it all the same to you?

Not so much. I mean, to me, it's all about the feel. If it's soft enough, I'll use it. So, I tend to avoid "real" wool, unless it's for a felting project (dude, I'm in Florida), and it seems like a lot of projects are for babies. Oh, and washability. So much of my stuff is for gifts, and heck, I can't stand to handwash stuff. LB Homespun is fine (and washable), and I think it's Caron makes something that's really soft too. LB seems to make a lot of interesting snob-yarn-knockoffs-at-drugstore-prices. However, I've been dying to try Noro (whatever kind, self-striping) out for something, and there's something spa-like about wandering through my gourmet LYS and looking at the gorgeous handpainted colorways.

2. Do you spin? Crochet?

nope and nope

3. Do you have any allergies? (smoke, pets, fibers, perfume, etc.)

Only some environmental sensitivity (mold and pollen, I think)

4. How long have you been knitting?

Hmm. I first learned in early high school, and then picked it up again in my early 20's. So, this stint is going on 10 years. However, I'm only just starting to feel confident enough to try anything remotely complicated, and since this is purely an unwinding hobby for me, if it's too much work (like remembering what row I'm on), I won't do it. I'm starting to sound pretty grouchy, I know. Oh, and I don't tend to block and I don't like sewing things - not because of the dislike of sewing itself, but because I don't trust my stuff to be sewn strongly enough to survive normal wear and tear.

5. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

I do have one on amazon. I recently added some nice looking books. :^)

6. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)

Hmm. Subtle, natural scents. Vanilla, Honeydew, lavender, etc.

7. Do you have a sweet tooth?

Hah. yes. but I'm also in Weight Watchers.

8. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?

I scrapbook, but that's been woefully neglected due to space issues - I don't have the motivation to get all the stuff out and don't want to have to put it away again. I sew a little. Easy things - no buttonholes or zippers. I like to cook, however, I'm pretty limited on time. I have an ambitious list of DIY projects to improve the home also.

9. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

My computer should be able to do that. Musically, I'm a child of the 80's (REM, Oingo Boingo, 10,000 maniacs, U2, etc). I also like the oldies station, and have been finding myself on the jazz station too. The recent stuff that I like...I never seem to know the names of the songs and/or artists. Lately I've been listening to Sarah McLaughlin, Elvis, Joni Mitchell, and Norah Jones. I wish I'd brought my Jimmy Buffet CD in to work too.

10. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?

Purple. I tend to pick oceanic colors (aquas, blues, greens). I like pink too. And I've been intrigued by orange lately too, though I haven't figured out how to use it yet. Sunshine yellow. Red is nice, but not my favorite. Sometimes I just feel gray. I really don't like magenta, and I probably wouldn't pick black. My mom's friend called me Colorful Cathy when I was young, and I don't think I've strayed too far from that.

11. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

I have a dog, Tiger, 2 kids (one bio and one step- a boy age 11 (step) and a girl age 2 (bio)), a husband, and my MIL who has Alzheimer's lives with us too.

12. What are your life dreams? (really stretching it here, I know)

For my kids to grow up to be "big and strong", for my MIL to not know the misery of end stages of AD, to live happily ever after with my DH.

13. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?

Stuff with some stretch to it is a lot easier, and larger weights. I don't mean super-chunk, use a size 32 needle or something, but worsted or heavier. I get a little carpel-tunnely otherwise.

14. What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

Anything itchy.

15. What is/are your current knitting obsession/s?

I'm working myself up to try socks. Previously, felting fascinated me, and if I complete them, these will be my first sweaters, ever.

16. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

Hmm. I knit a lot of scarves, hats, and baby blankets. I'm just now trying my hand at sweaters. And, there's something to be said for a quick turnaround project.

17. What are you knitting right now?

Right now. Two toddler sweaters, a French Market Bag, and a baby blanket.

18. What do you think about ponchos?

That's a lot of knitting for something I won't wear.

19. Do you prefer straight or circular needles?

Circs, in general. I like the balance of it. DPN are an interesting sport.

20. Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?

not picky. However, I just inherited like a thousand needles from my grandmother's stash. I should be set for quite a while.

21. Are you a sock knitter?

No, but I aspire to be one.

22. How did you learn to knit?

My grandmother taught me. Then when I picked it up again, my aunt sent me a booklet.

23. How old is your oldest UFO?

Since the beginning or since abandonment? Probably about 4 years.

24. What is your favorite animated character or a favorite animal/bird?

sea turtles. Snoopy.

25. What is your favorite holiday?

Memorial Day. July 4th is my second favorite. Anything where we get a free day off work without the pressure of having to surprise or gift our loved ones.

26. Is there anything that you collect?

At this point? Yarn. My husband looks at me suspiciously whenever he catches me with a box of yarn from an online merchant.

27. What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

I just subscribed to Interweave Knits.

28. Any books out there you are dying to get your hands on?

I think I added something to my list. There was a Zimmerman one that I wanted. I'll have to go figure out which one again. It was the one with the surprise baby sweater in it, if that helps. I updated my Amazon list with lots of nice-looking knitting books.

I joined this ring recently.

The baby blanket for Quatro.

The start of another French Market Bag - in Garnet and Gold for my sister.

The back of a toddler sweater for Dulaan. Clearance Acrylic in the "Denim" colorway.

Filatura Di Crosa Empire - formerly in Tie One On. Now Frogged and waiting for the next big thing.

Cascade 220 Superwash for a sweater for Quatro.

YAKU. Yet Another Knitting Update

Well....we made a milestone on the FSU FMB - we made it past the increases of the bottom - now we're at the band of base color before we switch to the main side color.

I couldn't resist starting the baby blanket for Quatro. It's such a springy color - like a bag of green grapes, it is.

The two little sweaters are sadly negelected, and shamefully, I'm contemplating starting a new project - slicing up as many plastic grocery bags as we have at home (before someone recycles them) to start on my Father's Day Gift - I decided on knitting him a doormat out of recycled grocery bags. He loves the free stuff, what can I say. And I think that conservation is near and dear to his heart, as he would go through the house saying "When not in use, turn off the juice", and turn off the light you were using. Another of our favorites - "When the sun is bright, use it's light!" Another story that says a lot about my upbringing is when my sister, my mom, and I were all off at college, his goal was to get the power bill under $25. I think he got it under $30 ($26-$27 range) - South Florida - no a/c, and I think only using the solar water heater - no active water heating was probably required. This was in the summer.

But wait, there's more!

I got my first episode of Interweave Knits today. OK, I know that all of the other subscribers already got theirs. So far, I'm enjoying the geeky, esoteric knitting as art articles in the beginning. Who knows if I'll like any patterns, but, heck, it's keeping me from knitting tonight.

Oh, and I forgot to adjust my sidebar before. OK. That's it. I'm sure.

The superwash is here, some frogging, and more

1. The superwash is here, the superwash is here! Now I really want to get my sister's FMB done so I can start the blankey for our friend Quatro. Sorry Dulaan kids - Although I do have two sweaters going right now, I might have a spectacular box for next year. It's so much easier to knit things for the people you love, well, to me it is. Oh! The colors are dreamy, and I think it'll be really nice and soft. I'm holding a pale spring green together with cream, and using #11 needles. I'm using the regular knit on a bias dishtowel pattern. You can look at it here for free, although it was in one of the beginning knitting books I saw last time I was in Borders. Cheesy, IMHO because it seems like it's just about public domain at this point. Mine will be sans-hood. The other color I got was a pretty...hmm...between an ocean blue and robins egg blue. A little bright, but nice. Was planning to knit a sweater for Quatro too.

2. I frogged Tie One On (T1O). For one thing, I dont think I had enough yarn - the wool/silk blend I was using was much more dense than what the pattern called out for, and was very stretchy - so it wasn't getting very tall - so the other thing was that it just didn't look right. However, I very much liked the two-tones of purple held together. I think it might end up being nice as a scarf - I'm thinking Wendy's lantern scarf, perhaps.

An embarassing story about the baby blanket - I was so jazzed to start it - I wound up a ball of the two yarns together, and so far I started it twice. Um. Once because I was so tired, I was making mistakes in my pattern (forgetting to increase), and the second time because I realized that I couldn't quite remember the pattern. Luckily, I had emailed the link to myself. This is embarassing to me because (1) I've made at least 4 of these blankets before [they are the best thing ever!] and even taught my mom how to do it and (2) it's such a simple pattern.

Other progress - I'm at least halfway up the back of the toddler sweater I'm working on at work. We had a lunch and learn about innovation, and I innovated me some knittin'. It was a really interesting topic - there are so many levels to innovation - incremental innovation (release number 123.222 of a given product), paradigm shifting innovation (web browsers), solving a specific known problem innovation (microsoft windows updates), using technology in a whole new way innovation (napster and other file sharing technologies, flash animation, etc).

My sister's FMB is coming along. I'm about 3/5 to 4/5 of the way to the number of stitches in the body, and so far the quarters are still pretty symmetrical. I was shocked and amazed, and promptly started doing increases in a knit row, and not even in the first quadrant. I think I've recoverd from that, though. Knock on wood.

My other Dulaan toddler sweater is coming along. I brought it to our Cub Scout/Boy Scout district adult leader recognition dinner, and knitted while we waited to eat, and more during the awards portion. I had to keep putting the knitting aside to applaud was the only thing. Fortunately some of the presentations were pretty verbose. It's amazing how active some of the parents are in scouts. Having active parents really helps improve the quality of the program for the boys. My co-worker, and our Bear-now Webelos 1 leader got best a best den leader award with a nomination from one of the parents - a parent who moved way the heck to the other side of town. She (the winner) doesn't think too highly of a bunch of adults sitting around handint out awards and patting themselves on the back, so they had to tell her that the Pack was getting recognized in order to get her to go - wah-ha-ha-ha. A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. In the end, she seemed touched by the award.

I signed up to do Secret Pal 5! Should be interesting, and a good way to get to know other bloggers out there. There are tons of people signed up already. I also signed up for this knit something for me thing, (Just for Me KAL) but I haven't figured out how to post anything and tell my story. I guess I could, um, email the hosts. They seem nice and I don't think they'll tell me to RTFM.

I joined this one too.

I joined this on Friday! Should be an adventure. :^)

The superwash is on the way!

Woo-hoo! Can't wait! I got one of those USPS tracking emails today! Better get knitting on some other stuff. I'm feeling fried, so I'm thinking of some garter stitch therapy in Tie One On.

Monday, May 16, 2005

Woo-hoo!

So, I started so many things this weekend! The FMB for my sister is almost ready to move on to circs. I've got the first two-color part done on T1O (Tie One On), and a few rows up. Haven't started decreasing yet. I'm just praying that I have enough yarn. They're all 50g balls, just like in the directions, but who knows if they're even close to the same gauge or density? F=MA, you know. Or is it M=VD. In 10th grade chemistry (honors) that was darn funny, and it made the formula easy to remember. Oh, one other thing I started - a blue chenille pullover, also from the Yarn Girl's Guide to Knits for Kids (or something similar). Going to be drop shoulder, all stockinette - rolled edges. That chenille isn't stretchy, so I'll have to work on my loose knitting, just to keep from being thrown to the wolves.

I need to call Little Knits tomorrow - the pretty pale green is there for our friend Quatro's baby blanket! I decided to knit the pale green with cream held together. Think that'll be dreamy, though maybe not so boyish as he gets older.

I felted!

I felted the FMB! It's way cool! So fuzzy. The stitches are still kind of evident in the pink, but it's amazing how much thicker the fabric of it is. So, once I did that, I was all excited about the project again and started one in FSU's gold and garnet for my little sister.

I started a lot this weekend - also started Tie One On in some beautiful purple silk/wool blend that was an impulse buy from the sale bin at my LYS. Filatura di Crosa Empire. Like butter! For the two-strand part it's a dark purple and light purple held together, and it reminds me of pansys.

I "finished" a dulaan hat. Unfortunately, it's too small for my 2 year old, so it didn't work out. There's something to be said for knitting an "in the round" swatch and trying it on different peoples to get an idea of who it'll fit. I guess if you're not going with a "scientific" pattern that already worked out the stitches/inch math and all that, then doing a swatch would probably help ensure success. Lessons learned.

Got some more knit on the toddler sweater that I'm doing for Dulaan too. The yarn is soooo pretty. Still on the back, though. The stockinette is slow going, don't know why.

Oh, and I had an expensive lunch on Friday. I decided that I wanted to have a knitting project on hand at work, just in case, so I went to Michael's for lunch. The food portion of my lunch was only $2.12 (a whopper junior and small diet coke). I picked up some pretty blue chenille yarn and big number circs. Turns out that the chenille isn't washable, so instead of a scrumptious baby blanket for Project Linus, I'm going to try another simple looking sweater for Dulaan. We'll see how it goes. I just didn't want to get the Homespun, I don't know why. Oh, cause it's a little splitty and persnickety to work with, although there were some very nice colors.

Approved!

I just got an email saying I was approved for the Southern Knit Bloggers webring!

I ordered yarn tonight - for the garter stitch baby sweater & cap from the Debbie Bliss baby knits book and for a baby blanket for the friend's tax deduction, mentioned in the queue in the side bar. Little Knits has Cascade 220 Superwash on sale for $7.50/skein. They're also good people.

I started that sweater last night, and I SO love the colorway. Blues and purples and light blues and it's just lovely. I really hope there's enough to finish it. It's only a size 3. How much yarn could it take?

I've been knitting so much, I have 3 magazines to read that I have hardly touched (Real Simple and 2 episodes of Health). Gonna go and read and watch TV. I got a good knitting fix at Boy Scouts. I can't decided if the Dulaan hat is going to be double thickness. If it's single, then I might be almost done.

Finished the French Market Bag!

It's not felted yet, but done. I took a picture, but I'm a film camera girl. Maybe it'll be developed about the same time as when I felt the bag.

Yards per pound information can be found here. The reason I needed that info is because that darned acrylic sometimes doesn't have yardage info on it. I'm still in kind of a conspiracy mode from my security training at work, but I feel like it's all a plot by "big wool" to make sure you buy a couple extra skeins - just so you don't run out before finishing the project- because you have no idea how much yarn you really bought.

OK. After you've spent the week at work thinking about buffer overflows, cross-site-scripting, sql injection and people who have trouble spelling phonetically (fenet!c11y?) you know what's good to watch on TV? Enemy of the state. . And I've been getting more phishing mail than usual (the dead giveaway? I don't even have an account there to start with!) which it turns out my DH is getting the same spoofs as me, so it's not just me, I guess. Not sure why that makes me feel better about it.

So with this acrylic of unkown length, I started a toddler sweater. I have no idea why I can't tell a story from the beginning. The sweater is from the Yarn Girls Guide to Kids Knits. A nice book. It's a nice little pullover with ribbing on the hem and cuffs. I think I'm going to send it to Project Dulaan. Also the couple of scarves that I've got waiting for winter will be sent there too. I still have to tuck the ends in.

I got the Yarn Girls Guide to Kids Knits and the Debbie Bliss Baby Knits book for Mother's Day. The gift was not only the books, but having the opportunity to sit at borders and thumb through the knitting books without a 2 year old climbing on me or pulling the books down from the shelves. No card, but that's OK.

Did I mention?

I think I'm going to have to frog part of the FMB handles - the contrasting color part. I don't think I have enough to do them all. I'm on the fence about chickening out and frogging the two I have done vs seeing when I run out exactly and frogging then. With my luck it'll be when I have about 2 rows + grafting to go. Maybe I'll work on something else until the zeitgeist comes back. Like my Mother's Day present.

Is it odd that on my mother's day gift list I have the "bookbookbook" and a couple by Kevin Mitnick - the hacker. One on "social engineering" and one on software security?

Thanks to Now Norma Knits!

Red Scarf Done!

I took my red scarf off the needles yesterday. I need to weave in the ends and send it to Lisa the project owner. Hopefully someone wants my scarf.

I promptly started BonBon from a back issue of Knitty today at my secure coding training. It was delightful stockinette therapy. I have to say that I might be a Stockinette Avenger. [I grabbed the button from Now Norma Knits.] BonBon is in Crystal Palace Big Net, recommended by the pattern author as a good substitute for the original yarn, which is now difficult to find. I think the Big Net is going to work out well. It's going to be a mother's day gift for my mom. I think I'll find some yummy bath gell or bubble bath to go with it.

I finished my red scarf!

Wrapping things up

I spent a lot of time reading about the Dulaan Project today. I'm inspired to get my red scarf off the needles so I can try making some things for the Dulaan project. I've got about 12-18 inches to go. I also want to get the FMB off my needles so I can work on some ballet slippers for the monkey-girl. I've got 2 1/2 handles to finish up + some grafting.

What am I doing here then?

I applied to join the Southern Knit Bloggers webring today!

Progress on the French Market Bag

I've been working on the French Market Bag pretty much exclusively. I'm up to the handles now. It turned out to be a bigger project than I anticipated. I'm thinking of making Mason-Dixon ButtonHole bags for my mom and sister now instead of the FMB.

I also made a mitered corner square out of some of the vintage wool to see (a) how to do a mitered corner square and (b)to see if/how it felts. I'm planning to felt it with the FMB. I think next on the needles are the felted ballet slippers for La-la, and I need to get cracking on my red scarf, if I want to make the deadline. I think I'm about 2/3 of the way done with it.

I'm also thinking that I could make a tote bag out of the mitered squares. I might have to draw some pictures, but maybe that's what the FSU bags will be - snazzy striped mitered squares.
